Guidebook to the Karkonosze Mountains


Getting Aroud to Jelenia Gora
International traffic meets in Wroclaw, the Lower Silsian capital city. Wroclaw hosts the international airport, the railway station, the bus station and offers international transport services. The dense net of connections give a good approach to the city of Jelenia Gora, which is the capital of the Karkonosze Mts. and a starting point for local tourist destinations. Bus fare from Wroclaw to Jelenia Gora takes about 2.5h, by train about 3h.

To Jelenia Gora by Car
If you travel by car take A4 freeway in Wroclaw, drive to the road crossing in the village of Kostomloty, later take road 378 and go to Strzegom. Pass the town of Strzegom, Dobromierz village, the town of Bolkow and go to Jelenia Gora by road #3. The travel from Wroclaw to Jelenia Gora takes about 1.5h. The access to Karpacz is really childlishly easy, just follow the signs.

To Jelenia Gora by Bus
In Jelenia Gora you may either take the bus to Karpacz Gorny or Karpacz Bialy Jar (Bialy Jar - the name of the bus stop). Most buses finish their fare in Karpacz Bialy Jar. The Samotnia Refuge may be reached both from Karpacz Bialy Jar or Karpacz Gorny. If you want to visit outstanding Norwegian Vang Stave Church http://www.sponsor.com.pl/wang/default.htm (in Polish - Kosciolek Wang), the one of local attractions, go to Karpacz Gorny.

The direct bus from Wroclaw to Karpacz Gorny is at 6:45am (platform 1, bus stop #3), to Karpacz Bialy Jar 8:40am (platform 1, bus stop #3), 12:35pm (platform 1, bus stop #1), 13:40pm (platform 1, bus stop #4).

To Jelenia Gora by Train
Just take Wroclaw-Walbrzych-Jelenia Gora train and spend there about 3h. While in Jelenia Gora, leave the building of the train station and go to the bus stop #1. There you have buses both to Karpacz-Bialy Jar and Karpacz Gorny. The majority of buses go to Karpacz-Bialy Jar. If you definitely want to get Karpacz Gorny, you may take a taxi from Karpacz-Bialy Jar.

Approach to the Samotnia Refuge from Karpacz- Bialy Jar
If you don't want to take a chair lift, follow the marked trail in:
. yellow - this trail, which in fact was the old Sledge Track (In Polish - Tor Saneczkowy), leads you straight to the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge. After you reach this refuge, follow the blue marked trail and go to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike takes about 1.5h, hike between refuges takes about 10 min.
. green - this trail climbs along the the Plasawa river valley. The trail took its name after famous Polish skier, olympic champion, climber, mountain rescuer Bronislaw Czech (in Polish - Droga Bronislawa Czecha). After about 1h, the trail meets the surfaced road, which is simultaneously the blue trail and the service road for cars. Turn left and follow blue marked trail leading you straight to the Samotnia Refuge. Attention: if you hike in winter, you may follow this blue trail only to the small bridge called the Goat's Bridge (in Polish - Kozi Mostek), where blue trail enters the forest and later runs through avalanche prone area. To avoid avalanches, don't turn right just behind the bridge but keep going the surfaced road which leads to the signpost showing the direction to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike takes about 1.5h.
. black - this trail is safe only in snow-free conditions. Never follow this trail after snowfalls due to avalanches (nineteen avalanche deaths in March 1968). Follow black signs and climb to the place known as the White Ravine (in Polish - Bialy Jar). There is a signpost showing the direction to the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge. Follow yellow-marked trail untill you see the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge (about 5 min.). After you reach this refuge, follow the blue marked trail and go to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike takes about 1.5h; hike between refuges takes about 10 min

Approach to the Samotnia Refuge from Karpacz- Bialy Jar and Mt. Kopa Chair Lift Upper Station. In Snow-Free Conditions
. From the bus stop Bialy Jar go to the base station of the Mt. Kopa Chair Lift. After you ascend Mt. Kopa (1377 m. a.s.l) and chair lift upper station (about 20min.), pass by the building of the upper station (inside the little bar and WC), turn right, then follow the black trial. In about 20min. you reach the place known as the White Ravine (in Polish - Bialy Jar; never follow this trail after snowfalls due to avalanches; nineteen avalanche deaths in March 1968). There is a signpost showing the direction to the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge. Follow yellow marked trail untill you see the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge (about 5 min.). After you reach this refuge, follow the blue marked trail and go to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike totals approximately 40min. The hike between refuges takes about 10 min.

During Snowfalls and in Avalanche Danger
. From the bus stop Bialy Jar go to the base station of the Kopa Chair Lift. After you ascend Mt. Kopa (1377m. a.s.l) and upper station (about 20min.), pass by the building of the upper station (inside a little bar and WC) and keep going straight on till you see a special sign 'Droga Zimowa ' (in English - The Winter Trail), which leads you far away from the avalanche prone area of the White Ravine (in Polish - Bialy Jar). This special winter trail guides you to the crossroad with blue trail. Turn right and follow the blue trail to the Strzecha Akademicka Refuge. After you reach this refuge, follow the blue marked trail and go to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike takes about 1h; hike between refuges takes about 10min.

Approach to the Samotnia Refuge from Karpacz Gorny
. Take Jelenia Gora-Karpacz Gorny bus and buy a ticket to the Karpacz Wang bus stop. After you leave the bus, go up to the Vang Stave Church http://www.sponsor.com.pl/wang/default.htm (in Polish- Kosciolek Wang). After you see this Romanesque, wooden church, brought here from Norway, follow blue marked trail to the Samotnia Refuge. It is the safest and the easiest way to our refuge leading through the scenic parts of the Karkonosze Mts., for example, near the Karkonsze National Park Educational Centre 'Domek Mysliwski", along the Lomnica banks and meanders, and the post-glacial cirque. In winter, you may follow blue trail only to the small bridge called the Goat's Bridge (in Polish - Kozi Mostek), where the blue trail enters the forest and later runs through avalanche prone area. To avoid avalanches, don't turn right just behind the bridge but keep going the surfaced road which leads to the signpost showing the direction to the Samotnia Refuge. The hike takes about 1.5h.
